So you want a modeling contract.

So you think that you would like to get a modeling contract!  Well it may be a lot easier than you would think.  Because it is not getting the contract that is the hard part, it is getting work as a model and that is the secret.

You see just by walking through the door of far too many agencies you will find them all too ready to sign you up. They may say something like ” you have an unique look”, ” I’m sure we can find work for you”, ” you would be a great addition to our group of models”. Here take our contract to your lawyers to review, knowing full well that you won’t have a lawyer, but it makes them sound serious and sincere. So you sign their contract. You walk out the door on cloud nine. And you go home and wait.

First of all, now that you are signed up, you can’t sign with anyone else. Your theirs and even if you should find work in that field or any related field they are going to get their ten percent or whatever fee you sign for.

Next nothing happens, they leave you to cool your heels until you figure that it is time to call them and then they will invite you in. At which time they will tell you that you need to start building a portfolio. Their photographer, because he knows the look they are going for, oh and this will cost you $$$. They get their cut and even if the pictures are not as good as the ones that you already have, it is their call.

Now you will need some training and guess what? Yes, they can do that too, at a price. After that course you will probably benifit from this other course and oh you will need some more pictures to pad out your portfolio. So now great, you are showing promise and we think that you might like to attend a modelling convention that we have coming up. Yes, we know that it is a lot of money, but we are bring in agents for all over the world and we are really hopeful, etc.

Yes you can grow and benifit from the experience, but do realize that your chances of getting any real work are very slim. I attended one of these conventions were prospective models had paid $1500.00 for the weekend. The model that had invited me to attend and watch her on the catwalk, lend moral support etc., had paid nothing to be there. Her agent thought that she had a real shot at breaking into the market.

Don’t be too quick to sign any papers and do your research. Shop around, talk to other models. Ask questions.
