Learning to read photographs.

The finishing touch.
The finishing touch.
Learning to read pictures. Every picture tells the story of how it was taken. Look for highlights in the eyes or spectral highlights reflected in shiny medal, glass etc. Look for the shadows cast by the light or lights. Is the shadow soft and defused or does it have a hard edge? Look for the shape of any reflections, especially on glass or in the eyes. In this case a large soft box was used directly in front of the model. You can see the rectangular highlight in her eyes and if you look closely at the eyes you will see a light trace of a reflector bouncing light into the lower half of her eyes. Look at the highlight on the brush and the shadow on the hand of the Make Up Artist. Look for the direction of the light and how flat it is or how much contrast there is in the picture. Every photograph will reveal it’s secrets if you just learn to read them.

Colour or Black and White?

MasqueradeMasquerade B&W

Time was when you had to decide before you took the picture. Now even if you intend to create a monochrome image with digital photography the place to start is a colour file. You may just find that colour works better after all. You may find that you want both colour and black and white. If you start by shooting everything in colour you have every possible option and you have more control over the final picture. If you convert the picture to monochrome instead of leaving it up to your camera, you get to decide on contrast, brightness, etc.

In Corel Photopaint, split the channels of RGB and just keep the red channel for an infrared look, you’ll get very light skin tones. Or convert to LAB and then split the channels, keep L – O for a more natural skin tone. That is how this black and white was created. In Adobe Photoshop, use convert to black and white. This allows you to adjust the amount of each colour individually, to gain optimal control of you final picture. You may want to punch the contrast up as a finishing touch, just make sure you have kept detail in the highlights and the shadows for whichever media you are going to use for the final presentation.

A Known Quantity!

Colour Card

If you are ever having trouble controlling colour or tone, if you are having problems with white balance, whether in your camera, monitor or from your printer. Introduce a known quantity into the equation. Although this very useful Kodak card is no longer available there are other colour swatches and or gray cards.

I add this card to one of my pictures for any given photo setting and then when it comes to processing the raw files I simply sample the white balance from the gray scale. I can also use the lightest white and the darkest black to set my exposure and black point and even print it out to compare the final print result with the original. This is even more useful for digital photography than it was when I first started using it with film. A simple trick like this could save you hours of frustration.

The photo shoot was good!

Catlyn

The photoshoot was good ( see preparing for a photo shoot ) and I have several different looks with good pictures from each look. No time to work on them all with Christmas coming up but they are in the can, as they say in the film industry. Candy Wai was the make up artist and she has done a good job. I look forward to working with her again. Maybe next time on one of her ideas. And the model Catlyn is a joy to work with, so yes there is a lot involved in putting together a studio shoot but then the results can make it all worth it.

Preparing for a photoshoot.

Straight forward enough, you would think but in reality there is so much to do. When am I available? Can I book a model for the shoot and when I have a model lined up can I book a make up artist. Three of us available at the same time, now make sure we are all on the same page. We all know what we are trying to achieve. What the theme of the shoot is. Send the make up artist pictures of the model so she can develop ideas and start working out how she is going to reach the desired results.

Pull the clothing together. The model is supplying the shoes to go with clothes she has never seen. Have clips and pins the make sure the clothes can at least be made to look like they fit. And now the props, creating the story, now work out the lighting.

Ok, charge the camera battery and while that is happening update the computers virus checker and make sure that windows is up to date. You don’t want virus scans or updates slowing you down as you upload pictures from your cards. Cards, make sure the cards are there and ready to go. Check the camera………

I’m shooting tomorrow, it is time to get back to work or I’ll never be ready on time. Maybe some new pictures here soon!

Teaching digital photography.

It is always great to learn something new, but it is even better when you have the chance to teach other people and share your knowledge. The other night I presented a workshop at one of the local camera clubs. Good fun and rewarding, for me at least! I’m sure that some people picked up some new ideas or learnt a little more about what is possible with digital photography.

A print is a print is a

Not so fast! Not all prints are created equal. People have asked me, why are your print prices so high. I can get this size print at the drug store for $$. Traditional photographic based print can have a very limited life span, especially if the chemicals are not fresh, or if the rinse time is too short to clear all of the residual chemicals out of the paper. You may get ten or twenty years without a problem, but if you are paying good money to have a picture taken professionally it makes sense to invest in a high quality Gichee print. Pigment rather than dyes on a quality acid free paper, with reasonable care will outlast us all. I like to tell people that if this print fades in the next eighty years bring it back and I will replace it. It is worth the investment to know that ones grandchildren will be able to enjoy a piece of their history.

Fun and Rewarding!

BackgroundForegroundIt was both fun and rewarding to take these two pictures shot at very different times and in very different locations and combine them together to create an interesting and I think realistic new image. The most recent image on the left was shot in my studio a week ago. A plastic knife from the dollar store and if I could have found one there would have been a large conch shell in the picture. The background was from a trip to the Oregon Coast last summer. The final result my own Bond Girl walking up the beach.

Photo Convention

Hands on Workshop

Hands on Workshop

There is always something new to learn and if you find you are no longer getting much out of conventions for amateur photographers, maybe it is time to move up to the professional circuit. I’ve just spent the weekend at Black Rock Resort in Ucluelet, taking part in Island Quest. Part of the Professional Photographers of BC lecture series. Several first class lectures and hands on workshop, lead by professional photographers. Using fill flash balanced with daylight.

Almost ideal!

Bridge removedBefore

Sometimes you find the perfect model, great make up and a great outfit. You are off and running, now all you need is the right location. The weather is being kind to you and there it is, the perfect Gazibo. Just right to show off this fashion outfit. It may only be later when you are preparing to print that you see this big gray monster of a concrete bridge in the background. Enter Photoshop and several hours of your time. Life is never easy, but sometimes the effort is more than worth while.
